No. 5 Georgia Tech Hosts GT Invitational

THE FLATS – No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball (2-0) will make its home debut of the 2022 season by hosting the GT Invitational in O’Keefe Gymnasium this weekend, welcoming Dayton (2-1), Arizona State (2-1) and FIU (0-3) to The Flats.

The Yellow Jackets will take on the Flyers on Friday at 8 p.m. for their first action, followed by matchups with the Sun Devils on Saturday at 5 p.m. and the Panthers on Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap up the tournament.

Tickets for this weekend’s tournament are available HERE. Tickets for matches on Friday and Saturday will serve as all-day tickets, granting access to each match of the day pending gymnasium capacity. Students with a Buzz Card will be permitted free of charge. PLEASE NOTE: Reentry is not guaranteed based on gymnasium capacity.

Parking

Parking will be available in the McCamish Pavilion lot, the East O’Keefe Gymnasium lot and the Family Housing lot.

Radio

Georgia Tech’s radio broadcast for home matches throughout the season will be streamed online HERE.

Promotions

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, free t-shirts and shakers will be given to the first 200 fans to enter O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Storylines

  • The Jackets received their second highest ranking in program history of No. 5 in this week’s AVCA DI Coaches Preseason Poll. This year’s team joins the 2003 squad, who held the five spot through four consecutive weeks.
  • The Jackets’ selection marks the third consecutive appearance in the AVCA’s top 10 after being tabbed No. 8 at the end of the 2021 season and No. 9 in the 2022 preseason poll.
  • The Yellow Jackets have been listed in 40 straight top 25 polls to date. The No. 5 ranking is the highest for Tech over that span and overall since 2003.
  • Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann was named the first ACC Player of the Week of the season after a stellar weekend at the Ole Miss Invitational. The Brazilian bomber owns six career ACC Player of the Week awards and eight total weekly ACC honors after picking up a pair of ACC Freshman of the Week titles during her first season on The Flats. Bergmann was named ACC Player of the Week four times last season, the most by any player in the conference since 2015.
  • The vaunted outside hitter garnered Ole Miss Invitational MVP honors after piling up 45 kills at a .389 clip with 19 digs, three aces and four total blocks. With those numbers, she currently leads the nation in kills per set (6.43) and points per set (7.21).
  • The decorated Jacket piled up a career-high 33 kills in the season-opening victory over Ole Miss, tallying the fifth most kills in a single match in program history. Only four former Yellow Jackets on seven separate occasions have achieved the feat.
  • Bergmann also surpassed 1,200 career kills over the weekend while tallying her 133rd career ace, good for seventh in Georgia Tech history.
  • Senior middle blocker Breland Morrissette was named to the Ole Miss Invitational all-tournament team alongside Bergmann after leading the team with 10 total blocks while adding 14 kills at a .310 clip on the weekend. She tied a career-high six blocks on top of eight kills in Tech’s sweep of No. 19 Illinois.
  • As a unit, Georgia Tech is among the top five in the ACC in kills per set at 14.43 (second), assists per set at 13 (third), hitting percentage at 0.273 (fourth) and blocks per set at 2.43 (fifth).Nationally, the kills per set mark is currently 27th overall.
  • Tech was picked to finish third in the ACC by the league’s coaches for the third consecutive year.
  • Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann, sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and senior middle blocker Erin Moss were each selected preseason all-ACC.
  • Going beyond 2019’s NIVC title, Tech has won 60 of its last 72 matches.
  • Over the course of the past three seasons, Georgia Tech is 35-5 at home in O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Jackets went 12-3 on The Flats in 2021. Tech is 294-102 (.742) all time in O’Keefe Gymnasium’s 27-year history.

Series History

  • Georgia Tech and Dayton will meet for the first time in the history of both programs on Friday.
  • Arizona State has taken the previous three meetings against the White and Gold.
  • Tech claimed the only contest against FIU in program history, downing the Panthers 3-0 in a neutral match in 2010.

Georgia Tech will host its second straight home tournament, welcoming a pair of top 10 teams in No. 7 BYU and No. 8 Ohio State. The Yellow Jackets and Cougars will kick things off on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in O’Keefe Gymnasium.
