ATLANTA – The fourth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will face its third top-five opponent in the last eight days when it hosts No. 1 Northwestern (7-0) at the Bill Moore Tennis Center Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets (5-1), who faced No. 2 California and then No. 3 UCLA at the ITA Indoor Championships, is 1-1 against top-five teams this season. Northwestern defeated Georgia in the finals of this year’s ITA Championship to become only the sixth team in the 22-year history of the tournament to win the title. Georgia Tech had won the title in 2007 and ’08.
“We have had some great matches in the past,” said head coach Bryan Shelton of the series with Northwestern. “I expect it to be another great match this weekend. They are a well coached and very disciplined team. We have to match that to be successful on Sunday.
“Northwestern is a team that we can learn a lot about ourselves after playing.”
Northwestern leads the all-time series, 4-2, but the Jackets won the last meeting, 4-2, in the finals of the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Wildcats also hold the advantage in Atlanta, winning all three matches.
Sunday is camp day at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. All campers will be entered into a raffle to win a Georgia Tech item signed by coach Shelton.
Fans attending Sunday’s match will have the option of parking in Lower Peter’s Parking Deck or in Klaus Parking Deck for a nominal fee. Limited street parking is available on south of 6th St. on Fowler St.
