No. 35 Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader over Wofford and Georgia Southern

The No. 35 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team picked up two victories Sunday, defeating Wofford 7-0 in the morning and then blanking Georgia Southern, 7-0 in the afternoon. With the wins, the Jackets improved to 3-0 on the season.

In the first match of the day, Georgia Tech opened the day winning the doubles point. The Jackets claimed all three matches with David North and Marko Rajevac winning 8-4 to start things off. The Tech tandem of Scott Blackmon and Jose Luis Muguruza clinched the point for the Jackets. In the final doubles pairing of the day, Zachary Rath and Sukhwa Young took a 9-8 victory winning the tiebreaker 13-11 at the number one position.

Freshman Jordan Delass won in straight sets to clinch the first match of Tech’s doubleheader on Sunday, February 6. Fellow freshman George Gvelesiani made short work of Wofford’s Richard Cahi, 6-1, 6-0 to claim the first singles match of the day for Tech. Young won in straight sets, winning the second set in a 11-9 tiebreaker setting up Delass for the clinching match.

Blackmon and North were also straight set winners, while Muguruza won in three sets.

In the afternoon match against the Eagles, the Jackets continued playing well, opening the match by winning the doubles point. Tech again claimed all three matches with Blackmon and Murguruza winning at No. 2 over Lasha Janashi and Germano Knorr, 8-4. That was followed by a Jacket victory at No. 3 as Young and North clinched the doubles point with a 8-4 win over Charles Henry Trottet and Tom Green, 8-4. At line 1 doubles, North and Rajevac combined to defeat Vincent Patri and Danie Vandenheever, 9-8 (4).

The Jackets continued to roll as Rath defeated Green in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 while at No. 1 singles, Muguruza beat Patri, 6-3, 6-2. Noah Tyler clinched the match for Tech at No. 6 singles winning 6-1, 6-2 over Knorr. In the Jackets other matches, Delass was a straight set winner over Trottet at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2 while Young defeated Janashi in a close 7-5, 6-4 match at No. 3 and Rajevac fought back to win 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 over Vandenheever at No. 2.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action when they travel to take on Middle Tennessee State on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m.
