No. 35 Jackets Hold On For Win Against No. 44 Wolfpack

April 15, 2005

ATLANTA – Jordan Delass rallied from 5-2 down in the second set to win his match 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 and push No. 35 Georgia Tech past No. 44 North Carolina State by a score of 4-3 on Friday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. With the win the Jackets improve to 12-8 and 4-5 in ACC while the Wolfpack fall to 15-10 and 2-7 in the ACC.

Tech opened the match by capturing the doubles point by winning at No. 3 and and No. 2. After dropping the first three games, Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath won eight of the next nine games to win 8-4 at No. 3. Shortly after, Jose Muguruza and Sukhwa Young held on to win 9-7 at No. 2, giving the Jackets the point. In the final doubles match, Nick Cavaday and Will Shaw upset No. 52 David North and Marko Rajevac, 9-8 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play Rajevac continued Tech’s winning ways beating Shaw at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. He was followed by teammate Muguruza’s win over Conor Taylor at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. N.C. State tried to rally at the No. 2 singles spot as Cavaday beat North 6-2, 6-4. However, Jordan Delass killed off any hopes of a Wolfpack comeback by rallying from 5-2 down to come back and take the second set 7-5 before finishing off Josip Rospena 6-0 in the final set, for the 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

With the match in hand Rath was able to rall back after losing the first set 7-5 to win 7-6 (3) in the second set before falling in a tight 10-7 super tie-breaker in the third at the No. 5 spot. In the final match of the day at the No. 4 position Young battled hard with Iriarte but fell 7-6 (5) and 7-5 in a closely contested match.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday when they host No. 45 North Carolina in their final home match of the regular season at 2 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
