No. 10 Yellow Jackets Slice Through Orange for Sweep

THE FLATS — No. 10 Georgia Tech volleyball (15-4, 8-2 ACC) continued its winning ways against Syracuse (10-10, 6-4 ACC), sweeping the Orange (25-18, 25-21, 25-20) to increase its hot streak to four consecutive wins on Sunday in O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets outmatched the visitors offensively and stood tall defensively, tallying double-digit blocks for the second straight match behind a career day from senior middle blocker Erin Moss.

Georgia Tech’s potent attack overpowered Syracuse for its 12th sweep on the year and seventh of ACC play, nearly doubling the Orange in kills (48-28). The White and Gold also held the advantage in hitting percentage (.355-.126), assists (44-28) and digs (36-25).

Moss was lethal on both sides of the net, piling up a career-high 14 kills at a blistering .524 clip while tallying eight total blocks on the day. Joining Moss with another well-rounded day was senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann, who led the match with 15 kills while picking up eight digs and three blocks of her own.

Two more Yellow Jackets made the most of their attacks as graduate middle blocker Breland Morrissette was nearly flawless with five kills on an .833 hitting percentage while junior outside hitter Tamara Otene added nine kills at a stellar .562 clip. Defensively, Morrissette also added three blocks while Otene picked up four digs.

Setting up the attack was junior setter Bella D’Amico, who came away with 41 assists and pitched in defensively with six digs and three blocks.

Georgia Tech vs. Syracuse

October 23, 2022 (Danny Karnik)

How it Happened

Georgia Tech took control early in the first set, claiming nine of 10 points to speed ahead, 12-3. Syracuse would climb all the way back within a point to trail 16-15, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a four-point run to extend the lead to 20-15. The White and Gold closed the door shortly after, taking four of the final five points as a Moss kill put a stamp on set one, 25-18.

The second set was highly contested in the early goings up to a 10-9 Orange advantage, but Tech then rattled off nine straight points to catapult in front, 18-10. Syracuse continued to fight, crawling back as it did in the first set, this time knotting things up at 20 apiece. Mirroring the first set as well, the Jackets took control from there, winning five of the final six points as Morrissette capped set two off with a kill for a 25-21 victory in favor of the White and Gold.

Dealing its blows in twos, Georgia Tech inched ahead at the start of the third set, 6-2. The Yellow Jackets maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, initially staving off the Orange with a streak of four points to create separation for a 17-11 lead. Despite Syracuse continuing to nip at the heels of the White and Gold, Tech maintained an advantage of at least two throughout the rest of the set as the final two Jacket points resulted in a 25-20 triumph in set three and another match sweep.
