No. 10 Tech Falls to No. 9 Pitt in McCamish Pavilion

THE FLATS — Led by senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann’s 25 kills, No. 10 Georgia Tech volleyball fell 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 22-25, 25-16) to No. 9 Pitt in the first volleyball match played in McCamish Pavilion on Sunday. Bergmann claimed 10th place in program history in the strong outing, moving up to 1,460 career kills in front of a program-record crowd of 3,418.

Surrounded by a crowd that nearly tripled O’Keefe Gymnasium’s regular-season capacity and topped every attendance number on the road by almost 1,000 or more, Bergmann put together her fifth double double of the year. The decorated outside hitter finished with team highs of 15 digs and five blocks to go with her 25 kills, racking up her seventh 20+ kill match of the season in the process.

Joining Bergmann making an impact on the offensive end was graduate middle blocker Breland Morrissette, who came away with eight kills at a blistering .615 clip, good for a season high. Junior setter Bella D’Amico pulled the strings on the attack, totaling 38 assists while adding 10 digs for her third double double on the year.

Defensively, senior middle blocker Erin Moss matched Bergmann with five blocks while pitching in seven kills.

How it Happened

The first set was tit for tat as neither side managed to separate by more than two points until Pitt broke through with a four-point run to separate, 20-17. Following seven lead changes up to that point, Georgia Tech was unable to recover as the Panthers closed out set one on top, 25-20.

Both sides did their damage in spurts early in the second set as three bursts of three resulted in an 11-8 lead for the Jackets. Pitt followed suit to knot the set at 12 all, and the two top-10 squads again traded near even blows until extra points were necessary at 25 apiece. The Panthers would come away with two ensuing points, claiming set two, 27-25.

Facing potential defeat, the White and Gold would rally in the third set. The Yellow Jackets went on a four-point run early, thanks in large part to three straight kills from Bergmann, to skip ahead, 8-3. Tech would make another strong push to follow, stringing together five straight points for a 17-10 advantage. Despite Pitt’s last-ditch effort to draw near, the Jackets would win the final two points to secure a 25-22 victory in set three.

The Panther burst out of the gates in the fourth set, jumping out to a 10-1 lead. Georgia Tech climbed back using a pair of four-point runs to trim the lead to 11-7 and 18-15, but Pitt finished things off, winning set three, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.
