BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Georgia Tech track & field competed at the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary round. Nicole Fegans qualified for the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore. with her fifth place finish in her heat, good for an automatic qualifying spot to nationals.
Fegans will race in the 5000m on Saturday, June 11. The meet will be televised on ESPN.
Starting from the fourth position, Fegans stayed in the front of the pack. A clear pack of potential automatic qualifiers became noticeable around the 3000m mark, where Fegans was in the top five necessary for automatic qualification. Fegans was in third, almost 10 seconds ahead of sixth heading into the bell lap.
Only needing fifth to qualify for nationals, Fegans cruised to a fifth place finish, still nearly 10 seconds ahead of sixth place with a time of 15:56.61.
The Yellow Jackets had two more athletes competing in the high jump. Shanty Papakosta set a new personal best when she cleared 1.81m (5’ 11 ¼”). Carla du Plessis also competed in the high jump, putting up a mark of 1.71m (5’ 7 ¼”).
The final Jacket to compete on the day was Taylor Grimes who recorded a time of 13.53 in the 100 hurdles.
The White and Gold will compete in their final meet of the 2021-22 season when Fegans races in the 5000m at the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore. at 7:25 p.m. eastern.
