THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman Max Emberson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Golfer of the Month as announced by the league office on Friday afternoon. Emberson came onto the collegiate scene with dominance, winning his first two collegiate tournaments.
The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native made his collegiate debut at the Folds of Honor Collegiate with a first-round 8-under-par 63 on the performance of seven birdies and an eagle. Emberson would go on to claim a two-stroke victory for the individual title, while helping the Yellow Jackets to the team title. The freshman Yellow Jacket finished the tournament with an 11-under-par 202, setting a new tournament low 54-hole total en route to becoming the first true freshman since 2016-17 (Luke Schniederjans) to win their collegiate debut tournament. In 2019-20, Bartley Forrester was co-medalist at his first tournament as a redshirt-freshman.
Emberson was paramount in helping Georgia Tech take home the first tournament team title under new head coach Ryan Hybl as the Yellow Jackets finished with an 18-under-par team total of 834 for a five-stroke victory over second-place finishers Notre Dame and Texas.
Emberson carried momentum into his second collegiate outing, OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, winning a share of the individual title with a 13-under-par 197. Emberson then tied for 32nd in his latest tournament, the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational presented by Charles Schwab to own a current scoring average of 68.44.
With the back-to-back victories, Emberson became the first Georgia Tech freshman to win his first two tournaments in program history and the first freshman to win consecutive tournaments in their debut season. He is the 11th freshman to win a tournament in their freshman season and just the fourth freshman to win multiple tournament titles in his first year.
Emberson and the Yellow Jackets return to action at their home tournament, the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 16-18.
