HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Georgia Tech cross country teams recorded top-10 team finishes, highlighted by the men’s third-place finish at the Southern Showcase on Friday morning.
Taylor Wade emerged from the starting pack and quickly established his presence towards the front of the pack in the 8k race. Wade won the opening four-mile race in the season opener and pushed himself into a top-10 position throughout this race and crossed the line at 23:29.4 to claim sixth place overall.
Wade finished behind five Alabama runners as Alexander Arrambide claimed 18th place at 24:21.1 with Joey Sandel notching 25th place at 24:35.1. Matt Castronuovo and Wyatt Windham rounded out the scoring five in the 38th and 45th place, respectively. Tech featured its top-five runners in the top 50 and secured third place in the team standings, matching the squad’s best finish at the event.
In the 5k, Claire Shelton paced herself amongst the top 25 before climbing the leaderboard with Lottie Chappell. Shelton crossed the line at 16:59.6 to place 13th with Chappell finishing at 17:07.9 to finish 15th overall. The Jackets locked down two top-15 runners, one of only three teams with multiple finishers inside that mark.
Stella Chambless finished with a 17:36.1 pace to place 34th with Maddie Jones and Sadie Honig securing 88th and 95th place, respectively. The women’s team finished eighth overall with 231 points.
Wade finished more than 30 seconds under his 8k personal best as the lead Yellow Jacket with senior Kushan Patel also setting his 8k best at 25:20.2. The top trio of Shelton, Chappell, and Chambless all set personal bests in the 5k race.
The Jackets will host the Georgia Tech XC Invitational on Friday, October 2, from Douglasville, Georgia, at the Foxhall Sporting Club. Additional information about the event will be published at a later date.
