Tech Mauls Mercer in Historic Fashion

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (20-20, 5-10 ACC) had an unstoppable offense on Wednesday night as the Jackets defeated the Mercer Bears (15-18, 3-3 SoCon), 15-3, in five innings. Tech’s offense was highlighted by Gracyn Tucker who went 3-3 with two home runs, four runs, and six RBI.

QUICK HITS

• After recording her 100^th career hit on Sunday against Louisville with a double to right center, Tucker surpassed the 25-career home run mark as her pair of home runs on Wednesday put her at 26 career home runs.
• With her two midweek home runs, Tucker has now recorded 12 home runs in back-to-back seasons.
• Addison Leschber also saw her swing force one over the fence as she recorded her 10^th home run of the season, giving her the second most home runs this season behind Tucker.
• In her 21^st start of the season, 26^th appearance of the season, Madalyn Johnson faced 13 batters across 3.1 innings of work and collected not only three strikeouts but her 10^th win of the season.
• Sydnie Watts made her seventh relief appearance of the season, 16^th appearance of the season, relieving Johnson in the fourth. Watts went on to face six batters and collected two strikeouts across 1.2 innings pitched.
• Of the six Yellow Jackets that scored runs tonight, five scored multiple runs. Tucker led the team with four runs while Leschber and Holly Medina scored three and Alyssa Willer and Raegan Wall scored two apiece.
• Senior outfielder Paige Vukadinovich had an exceptional midweek showing as well as she went 4-4 with two doubles and a career high four RBI.
• Her four hits led the team against the Bears, while Tucker (3), Leschber (2), and Reese Hunter (2) also had multi-hit days.
• Tucker holds Tech’s longest active hitting streak of nine games. The streak is her second longest of the season after recording at least one hit in 12 consecutive games earlier this season.
• Leschber holds Tech’s longest active reached safely streak after the first baseman was able to get on base for the 12^th straight game on Wednesday. The active reached safely streak is Leschber’s longest of the season and the third longest for a Yellow Jacket this season.
• As a team, Tech saw its second most runs (15), second best batting average (.577), and third most hits (15) this season. The pitching staff saw their third game of the season not surrendering a single walk.
• Tech’s 15 run performance against Mercer was the seventh time Tech scored 10+ runs this season and advanced the Yellow Jackets to a 6-1 record when scoring double digit runs.
• The Yellow Jackets sit with a 58-17 overall record against the Bears, including a 32-4 home record. Wednesday’s run rule win is Tech’s seventh run rule victory against Mercer and its largest win in the series since 1993 (18-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After forcing Mercer to begin the game going three up, three down, Tech stacked four runs on four hits. The scoring frenzy began with a single to shallow right field that saw Willer come across for the first time. Vukadinovich’s first hit of the day was a double to right field that advanced home both Tucker and Leschber. Hunter came home for her first run of the day as well in the first inning off an Emma Simon single.
• Mercer was able to get on base with a single to left field in the top of the second, but one Bear was left stranded on base as Tech swiftly got three outs. Tucker and Leschber extended Tech’s lead in the bottom of the second with a pair of home runs that scored three combined runs.
• Tech forced a quick top half of the third as Johnson only faced three batters, catching one swinging, before Wall was back up to bat. The Yellow Jackets stacked another four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third starting with a single up the middle from Medina that sent Wall sprinting home from second. Tucker saw her second home run of the game, this time over deep center field to extend Tech’s lead to 10 runs. One final single from Gracie King helped Leschber come home to close out Tech’s third inning scoring.
• Mercer scored its two runs of the game in the top of the fourth off a home run over left field. Tech took the time to relieve Johnson with Watts, who was able to help the Yellow Jackets get the final two outs of the inning.
• In their last inning swinging, Tech recorded four runs on two hits to push the game out of reach. Tucker collected two final RBI after her single to center helped Wall and Willer get home for the last time. In her final at bat Vukadinovich slammed a double to left center, leading Medina and Tucker to score Tech’s final runs.
