NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Georgia Tech women’s basketball closed out this five-game road swing picking up a 59-55 road win at Belmont on Sunday afternoon in the Curb Event Center. Cameron Swartz and Tonie Morgan combined for 34 points in Tech’s second win over the Bruins in a week, pushing Tech to 7-2 on the season.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, but Georgia Tech dominated on the glass, winning the battle, 31-15, paced by eight (including five offensive) from Kayla Blackshear. Tech converted 12 offensive rebounds in the half into 11 points as the Jackets led 31-21 at intermission. Swartz led Tech offensively with 19 points in the opening 20 minutes, hitting double-figures with 10 points in the first quarter.
The Jackets opened a 14-4 lead off Swartz’s second three-pointer at 2:18 in the first. Tech would push its lead out to as many as 13 points multiple times in the second quarter before Belmont cut its deficit to five points, 24-19, using an 8-0 spurt. Nerea Hermosa snapped the momentum as Tech closed the half with a 7-2 run of their own, fueled by five points from Swartz for the 31-21 halftime tally.
Belmont went 11-for-12 at the free throw line in the third quarter to close the score to 41-38 to start the fourth period. The Bruins immediately knotted the score to open the frame, 41-41, but Morgan answered with an old-fashioned three-point play as Tech kept hold of a narrow lead.
Reflective of the first meeting between the programs, Belmont led 53-52 after a Madison Bartley three-pointer with 4:07 remaining in the game. Morgan and Blackshear put Tech back on top, 58-53, capped by another old-fashioned three-point play from Morgan as the clock wound down to 1:10 remaining. Belmont was able to connect on a layup, but the Yellow Jackets’ defense closed the game strong for the final 59-55 victory.
