Tech tallies its highest margin of victory in a single set this season

THE FLATS – No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball (4-0) furthered its undefeated start to the season with a 3-1 victory (25-17, 25-22, 13-25, 25-10) over Arizona State (4-2) in its second match of the GT Invitational on Saturday in O’Keefe Gymnasium. Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann powered Tech to victory once again behind her second 20+ kill performance and double double of the season.

The Yellow Jackets edged the Sun Devils in most major categories including kills (50-49), hitting percentage (.282-.221), assists (46-43), aces (9-3), digs (60-56) and blocks (6-5).

Bergmann finished with a match high 23 kills at a .400 clip, 10 digs, two aces and a block. Senior middle blocker Erin Moss followed offensively with eight digs while making her presence felt at the net with a match high four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino was another key cog in the Jacket defense, tallying career-high tying marks of 21 digs and three aces. Junior setter Bella D’Amico ran the point for the Tech offense as she totaled a match high 36 assists to go with a career-high tying 11 digs for her first double double of the year.

How it Happened

The two squads traded blows early as neither side managed to create separation up to a 14-13 Georgia Tech advantage. The Yellow Jackets took control from there, claiming eight of the next 10 points to build up a 22-15 lead. Tech closed things out shortly after as Moss put a stamp on the White and Gold’s 25-17 first set win with a kill from inside.

The second set was much of the same early on as the Jackets and Sun Devils went back-and-forth with runs of three and four points up to an 11-10 lead for Arizona State. The match remained neck-and-neck up to a 20-19 Georgia Tech lead, but the White and Gold strung together four crucial points to follow, holding off a last gasp effort by the Sun Devils for a 25-22 set two win.

Arizona State stormed back in the third set, maintaining control throughout its duration. Tech started to regain its composure at the tail end of the set with a burst of three, but the Sun Devils finished off the set on top, 25-13.

Georgia Tech rebounded in the fourth set, outmatching Arizona State from start to finish. The Yellow Jackets raced out to a 7-1 lead to start off the set, further asserting their dominance following a pair of Sun Devil points by claiming 14 of the next 16 points. Leading with a 16-point advantage at 21-5, Tech cruised onto a 25-10 set four win to secure its highest margin of victory in a set this season and clinch a 3-1 match victory
