Two More Selected on Final Day of MLB Draft

LOS ANGELES – Two more Georgia Tech baseball players heard their names called on Tuesday afternoon as they were selected on the final day of the 2022 Major League Baseball First-year Player Draft.

Marquis Grissom, Jr. (Atlanta, Ga./Counterpane School) was selected in the 13th round (No. 381 overall) by the Washington Nationals, before Tim Borden II (Sellersburg, Ind./Our Lady of Providence) was taken in the 16th round by the Houston Astros.

The eight total draft picks are the most for Georgia Tech since 2010, when it tied the school record for 10 total selections. Georgia Tech led the ACC with its number of picks and was tied for fourth overall in Division I, only eclipsed by Oklahoma (11), Tennessee (10), and Arkansas and Oklahoma State (nine).

Grissom battled back from a slow start to the 2022 season to finish with the top ERA among Yellow Jackets’ starters. In just 8 appearances and 14 starts, Grissom worked to four victories and a 5.75 ERA, striking out 57 overall and holding opponents to a .248 average. The Atlanta native was especially dominant down the stretch as he found his footing. He dominated Pitt with a career-high 10 strikeouts in six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits overall in the 19-3 win. He then mowed down seven hitters from nationally ranked Louisville in the ACC Tournament, pitching a career-long 6.2 innings and allowing just three runs on five hits in the 9-4 victory.

For his two-year career on The Flats, Grissom worked to five victories and a 5.69 ERA. He appeared in 27 games overall and made 21 starts, pitching 91.2 innings and striking out 88 hitters.

Borden hit the ground running in his first year after transferring to The Flats from Louisville, working to be one of Georgia Tech’s six .300 hitters in 2022. Borden finished the year hitting .335, appearing in 59 games and making 56 starts. He recorded 69 base hits, 13 doubles and 20 home runs – good for second best on the team – while driving in 63 runs. He set the single-season program record for hit-by-pitches, getting hit a whopping 25 times. On the season, he slugged .689 and tallied an on-base percentage of .466.

The Sellersburg, Ind. native, Borden earned second-team all-ACC honors as well as a second-team all-region selection.

All players selected in the MLB Draft have until Aug. 1 to sign with their selecting teams, unless that player has exhausted their collegiate eligibility – those players are free to sign at any time up until one week prior to next year’s draft.
