Jenkins, Medich Named Academic All-District

THE FLATS – Recognized as part of the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom, Georgia Tech baseball sophomore Andrew Jenkins and redshirt senior John Medich were selected to the 2022 Academic All-District First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets were one of onlytwo Atlantic Coast Conference baseball teams to have multiple selections as they joined just seven ACC selections overall. Tech earned multiple all-district selections for the third time in the last 10 years (2012, 2020) and the fifth time overall since 1979.

Jenkins received his first selection to the all-district first team, earning a 3.79 grade-point average in his third year in the business administration program at Georgia Tech. Medich also earned his first selection to the all-district team, capping his master’s degree with an impressive 3.81 GPA in quantitative and computational finance – just the second student-athlete to be in the program at Georgia Tech (Malik Rivera, football 2017).

On the field this season, Jenkins has been nothing short of tremendous. The Atlanta native has started all 49 games at first base for the Jackets thus far, hitting a scorching .383 for 18 doubles, one triple and 13 home runs for 53 RBI. Jenkins leads the conference and ranks top 15 nationally with 79 hits. He also ranks fourth in the ACC in doubles, fourth in sac flies (four) and runs (58) and total bases (138), fifth in average, and 10th in OPS (1.113). Jenkins has hit .400 alone against just ACC opponents this season, leading the league in hits (48) and runs (34), while ranking third in slugging (.742), fourth in OPS (1.197) and average.

For right-handed pitcher Medich, his stellar year continues as his hard work and determination has earned him the role of weekend starter for Georgia Tech. With a 5.28 ERA overall on 18 appearances, Medich has lowered that to a 4.44 ERA in six starts since becoming a member of the rotation. He has four wins, a save and 52 strikeouts on the season. His best outing of the season thus far came against then-No. 3 Miami on Friday night as he went a career-long 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out six. The Sewickley, Pa. native is in his second year at Tech after transferring from Rhodes College where he graduated undergrad with a 3.93 GPA.

First-team academic all-district honorees advance to the academic all-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team (when selected) academic all-America selections will be announced in June.
