Jackets to Face Louisville in ACC Tournament

No. 14-seed Tech meets No. 11-seed Cardinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday in opening round

THE FLATS – Following an 82-78 overtime win Saturday against Boston College to close out the regular season, Georgia Tech has drawn the No. 14 seed for the 69th annual New York Life ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and opens defense of its 2021 tournament title against No. 10-seed Louisville at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round.

The Yellow Jackets won their regular season finale for the fifth consecutive year Saturday, finishing with a 12-19 overall record, 5-15 in the ACC. The Cardinals, who lost at home, 71-61, to Virginia on Saturday, finished the regular season 12-18 overall, 6-14 in the ACC. Tuesday will mark the teams’ first meeting in the ACC Tournament.

The Tech-Louisville game will be the nightcap of an opening-round triple-header that includes No. 12 seed Pitt (11-20, 6-14) vs. No. 13 Boston College (11-19, 6-14) at 2 p.m., and No. 10 Clemson (16-15, 8-12) vs. No. 15 NC State (11-20, 4-16) at 4:30 p.m.

Michael Devoe (Orlando, Fla.), the reigning ACC Tournament MVP and the conference’s No. 3-leading scorer (18.00 points per game), No. 7 three-point shooter by volume (2.30 per game) and No. 4 by percentage (36.7), leads the Jackets along with senior forward Jordan Usher (Canton, Ga.), averaging 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

 

After capturing its first outright ACC regular-season championship since the 2005-06 season, Duke (26-5, 16-4 ACC) earned the top seed in the field as well as a double bye into the Thursday quarterfinals. No. 2 Notre Dame (22-9, 15-5), No. 3 North Carolina (23-8, 15-5) and No. 4 Miami (22-9, 14-6) also claimed double byes and will open postseason action on Thursday.

No. 8 seed Florida State (17-13, 10-10) plays No. 9 Syracuse (15-16, 9-11) at noon Wednesday to kick off the second round. No. 5 seed Wake Forest (23-8, 13-7) battles the winner of the Pitt-Boston College contest at 2:30 p.m. In the second session, No. 7 Virginia Tech (19-12, 11-9) plays the winner of the Clemson-NC State game at 7 p.m., while No. 6 Virginia (18-12, 12-8) takes on the Louisville-Georgia Tech winner at 9:30 p.m.

The Wednesday winners then will move on to play the tournament’s top four seeds on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

All 14 tournament games will be nationally televised on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ACC Network. In addition, all games will be available for streaming via ACCNX.

TECH’S ACC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Georgia Tech has played in 41 ACC Tournaments, and has a 28-37 all-time record in the event. The Yellow Jackets have won four championships, in 1985 (Atlanta), 1990 (Charlotte), 1993 (Charlotte) and 2021 (Greensboro).

Tech has been a runner-up four times (1986, 1996, 2005, 2010). The 1986, 1996 and 2010 runs to the finals occurred in Greensboro. Tech also made the finals in 2005 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Tech was 0-2 in the ACC Tournament under coach Dwane Morrison, 15-16 under Bobby Cremins (including all three titles), 9-11 under Paul Hewitt (runner-up in 2005 and 2010), 2-5 under Brian Gregory. and 1-3 under Josh Pastner.

Tech did not play in the 2020 tournament while serving an NCAA postseason ban.
