Strautmane Powers Jackets Past Paladins

THE FLATS – Fifth-year forward Digna Strautmane had a season-high 20 points and Georgia Tech women’s basketball played stifling second-half defense to defeat Furman, 63-36, on Sunday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.

Strautmane was lights out from behind the arc, going a career-best 6-for-12 from downtown to finish 7-for-15 overall. She pitched in six rebounds as well.

The Yellow Jackets (8-2) remain hot, winning their third-straight game on Sunday, thanks largely to defensive pressure that held the Paladins (5-6) to an icy 24.5 percent shooting from the field and 27.3 percent from three-point land.

In total, Furman scored just 16 points in the second half, including a mere five in the third quarter.

Offensively, Tech also got solid production from Avyonce Carter, who finished with a career-high 14 points, and Sarah Bates, who finished with 12. Lorela Cubaj commanded the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with five points and six assists.

The Jackets held a devastating 46-36 rebounding advantage, 22-8 points in the paint advantage and 17-9 offensive rebound advantage on the day.

Furman was led on the day by Tate Walters, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Georgia Tech remains home to host its first Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the season in Wake Forest on Sunday, Dec. 19. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network.
