THE FLATS – Georgia Tech finishes its season-opening three-game homestand Monday night when it hosts Lamar for a 7:30 p.m. tip at McCamish Pavilion.

Tech is coming off its first ACC championship season since 1993 and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011. The Yellow Jackets are 1-1 after dropping a 72-69 decision to Miami of Ohio last Tuesday and winning a 77-52 contest over Stetson Friday.

Head coach Josh Pastner has back five of Tech’s top seven scorers from the 2020-21 season, including ACC Tournament MVP Michael Devoe (Orlando, Fla.), senior forward Jordan Usher (Canton, Ga.), senior guard Bubba Parham (Snellville, Ga.), senior forward Khalid Moore (Briarwood, N.Y.) and junior guard Kyle Sturdivant (Norcross, Ga.). Those returnees are bolstered by the transfer of guard Deivon Smith (Loganville, Ga.) from Mississippi State and a freshman class ranked No. 28 in the nation.

The Jackets play seven of their first eight games this season at McCamish Pavilion. Tech does not leave the state of Georgia to play until Dec. 18, when it travels to Phoenix, Ariz., to play Southern California.

The Cardinals from Beaumont, Texas, playing their first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, went 10-18 overall last season and finished 7-10 in the Southland Conference. Lamar opened the 2021-22 season with 67-50 home court victory over Wiley, then auffered a 104-75 loss at Miami of Ohio Saturday.

Monday’s game will be streamed live online via ACC Network Extra, available on the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be on the Georgia Tech Sports Network by Legends Sports and flagship station WCNN (680/93.7 the Fan), as well as on satellite radio (XM channel 383, SiriusXM app 973).

SERIES VS. LAMAR

Georgia Tech and Lamar are meeting for the second time in men’s basketball, with the Yellow Jackets taking an 88-69 victory on Nov. 9, 2018 at McCamish Pavilion in head coach Josh Pastner’s third season.

Michael Devoe (9 points) and Khalid Moore (0 points) were the only current Jackets on the roster for the previous meeting. None of the current Cardinals played in the first meeting.

Tech is 2-1 against current members of the Western Athletic Conference, including a pair of recent wins over UT-Rio Grande Valley.

The Tech-Lamar game is part of a “multi-team event,” a four-team round-robin that included last week’s games against Miami of Ohio and Stetson. Miami, Stetson and Lamar all play each other as part of the event.

  • After hitting just four 3s in 17 attempts (all by Michael Devoe) against Miami, Georgia Tech went 9-of-19 against Stetson, with four different players connecting. Freshmen Deebo Coleman (4-for-6) and Miles Kelly, and transfer Deivon Smith each made the first 3s in their Yellow Jacket careers.
  • The Yellow Jackets have held both opponents this season under 40 percent shooting from the floor. Miami hit 39.1 percent, Stetson hit 35.0 percent.
  • Tech’s first two opponents have connected on just 37.1 percent of their shots from the floor and 20.7 percent of their three-point attempts.
  • Tech used 11 players against Stetson and 10 of them got in the scoring column. Tech’s bench has outscored that of its opponent in both games (34-21 vs. Stetson). The Jackets’ reserves outscored their opponents last year only six times, but won all six.
  • Michael Devoe has hit a 3 in his 12 straight games dating back to last Feb. 10 vs. Virginia, draining his first attempt against Stetson. The 2021 ACC Tournament MVP made at least one in 23 of 26 games last season, including the final 10 in a row.
  • Devoe has reached double figures in 12 straight games as well, with that Virginia game being the last time he didn’t, and has done so 61 times in his career.
  • Devoe had seven assists, one shy of his career best, five rebounds and three steals against Stetson.
  • In just two games this season, Devoe has moved from No. 36 to No. 30 in career points in Georgia Tech annals. He has scored 1,192 points in his Tech career.
  • Jordan Usher notched his second career double-double with 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds against Stetson. He missed a double-double by one rebound (12 pts, 9 reb) against Miami of Ohio. His only other game with double-digit rebounds came in the 2020-21 season opener vs. Georgia State (15 pts, 10 boards).
  • Usher went 7-of-10 from the floor and added 5 assists.
  • Dallan “Deebo” Coleman hit his first four 3-point attempts and went 4-for-6 from distance in the game, notching his first double-digit scoring game (12 points).
  • Sophomore Jordan Meka and freshman Jalon Moore saw their first action of the season. Meka played in just one game early last season before back surgery sidelined him for the rest of 2020-21.
