Former Tech Baseball All-American Ritter Passes Away

THE FLATS — Georgia Tech baseball all-American outfielder/utility player Ryan Ritter, who donned the White and Gold from 1993-95, passed away on Oct. 7 at the age of 47.

Under former head coach Jim Morris for one year before finishing out with current head coach Danny Hall, Ritter appeared in 167 games and 155 starts for the Yellow Jackets, playing primarily outfield as well as second base. En route to a .342 career batting average, Ritter recorded 217 hits, 138 RBI, 73 extra-base hits, including 34 home runs. After being named a freshman all-American in 1993, he went on to earn second-team all-American and first-team all-ACC honors in 1995. He holds the single-season program record for sacrifice hits at 14 (1993).

He was a part of Georgia Tech’s first College World Series appearance in 1994 where the Yellow Jackets were runners-up in the national championship game.

Ritter was drafted in the eighth round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, where he played two seasons in the minor leagues.

Ritter was born on Nov. 26, 1973 and graduated from Joseph Wheeler High School and Georgia Tech. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel 136 Mt Vernon Highway Sandy Springs. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m.
