Last indoor season Fegans broke school records in the mile and 3K, showing in just her second race of the 2021 campaign that she intends on continuing that trend.
At the Carolina Challenge Tech squared up against host South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Campbell, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, N. Carolina A&T, Savannah State and Southern Wesleyan.
Other notable performances by the Yellow Jacket women at the Columbia Challenge included three other top-five finishes by Attallah Smith (4th, 5.76m/18’10.75″) in the long jump, Taylor Cushman (5th, 5:07.67) in the mile and Taylor Grimes (5th, 8.46) in the 60m hurdles.
“It was a good weekend for the women as they competed hard and took some big steps forward,” said women’s track & field head coach Alan Drosky. “For the more technical events every meet right now is so important to get more attempts at full speeds and approaches. Obviously the highlight of the meet was Nicole breaking a 19 year old school record, it was a gutsy effort and a lot of fun to watch. But another highlight is a number of women really rounding into form. This was the first meet so far this year where the team could be in the facility to support each other and that team dynamic had an impact on the results.”
On the men’s end of things, long distance runner Andrew Kent and jumper John Watkins each had podium showings in their respective events. Kent raced to a 4:05.92 mark in the mile to take bronze, while Watkins had a 15.07m/49’5.5″ second-place effort in the triple jump.
Kent was joined in the mile top-10 finishers by Zach Jaeger (5th, 4:11.65), Cole Miller (4:11.65) and Braeden Collins (10th, 4:16.92).
Jumpers Cameron O’Neal (7.61m/24’11.75″) & Dylan Jean-Baptiste (13.99m/45’10.75″) turned in a pair of fourth-place performances in the long and triple jump, respectively. Vaulter Brian Hauch (5.01m/16’5.25″) also recorded a fourth-place outing in the pole vault.
“We were much sharper today than what we were over the last two weekends,” said men’s track & field head coach Grover Hinsdale. “We seem to be shaking off the extended Holiday break. Today, the guys posted some outstanding performances. Although there were more PRs posted than what I will mention here, there are the ones that really stood out to me.”
“Our two freshmen jumpers both posted lifetime best,” Hinsdale continued. “O’Neal finished fourth in a very competitive long jump competition and Watkins finished second in the triple jump with a PR. Kent and Jaeger both looked good running mile PRs. Alex Thomas ran a very competitive race and PR’d in the 800m. Hauch finished fourth in a very competitive pole vault competition with an indoor PR. Overall, I am very pleased with how we fought throughout this meet today.”
Georgia Tech track & field will be back in action next weekend at the Bob Pollack Invitational hosted by Clemson on Jan. 29-30 in Clemson, S.C.
