Cross Country Places Seventh, 11th at ACC Championships

JAMAICA PLAINS, Mass. – Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country capped great performances at the ACC Championships on Friday finishing 11^th and seventh overall.

The women were led by Hana Herndon who grabbed a 21^st place finish in a field of 136 individuals with a time of 21:00.7. Herndon also earned All-ACC honors for her outstanding performance in the women’s 6k. The Jackets averaged a time of 21:24.56 and tallied a score of 184, just five points behind sixth-place Duke. The women recorded their best finish since 2001, when they placed fourth at the conference championships.

On the men’s side, sophomore Braeden Collins led the White and Gold coming in 38^th place with a career-best time of 24:33.9. The men averaged a time of 24:45.88 and totaled 250 points.

Head coach Alan Drosky reflects on the meets, “First, a huge congratulations to Hana for earning all-ACC honors today.  She’s had a great season and this is a big accomplishment.  From the team standpoint, we’re disappointed with the results today.  Both teams competed hard, but neither team really executed a good first third of their races.  That put us in a tough spot.  From there they rallied and closed well, but just never got up to the position we should have been in much earlier.”

He continues, “We’ll learn from today and now focus on our south regional in two weeks.  Both the women and the men have a great opportunity ahead and that’s where we’ll focus our energy.”

 

Sophomore Nicole Fegans was the second Jacket to pass the finish line, placing 30^th overall with a time of 21:18.1. Amy Ruiz followed closely behind at 33^rd (21:21.0) and Mary Prouty finished 39^th clocking a time of 21:26.6. Rounding out the top-65 was senior Hailey Gollnick finishing 63^rd (21:56.4) and grabbing 64^th place was Ellen Flood with a personal best 21:57.8.

In the men’s 8k, Andrew Kent finished in the top-50 coming in at 40^th with a career-best 24:34.5 and senior Avery Bartlett clocked a time of 24:49.4 good for 54^th place. Following Bartlett, was Mitchell Sanders who finished 59^th (24:52.8) and Christian Bowles grabbed 70^th (24:58.8).

The Jackets are back in action for the NCAA South Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla., Friday, Nov. 9. The women’s race begins at 8:30 a.m. while the men compete at 9:30 a.m.
