Cross Country Reports for First Day of Practice

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country squads reported for their first day of practice on Tuesday morning. Following a short trek to Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, the Jackets worked on conditioning and stretching at football’s John and Mary Brock facility.

Cross country travels to Athens for its first meet of the season, hosted by Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 8. On the women’s side, the Jackets welcome eight newcomers, while the men add 11. Among the returners, senior Avery Bartlett looks to start another successful year after recording four top-30 finishes last season in six meets.

Amy Ruiz, who led the Yellow Jackets last year returns for her senior campaign. Ruiz finished first at the Jacksonville State Struts Opener last season, in addition to grabbing four top-30 finishes. She also finished 57^th at the ACC Championships, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals where she placed 29^th.

Head coach Alan Drosky reflects, “Both teams had a good first day after training apart all summer. We ran a long progression run just to get an idea where everyone is coming into the season. The results were good, I think ahead of where we were last year. We liked what we saw with both the upperclassmen and the freshmen.”
