CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Alex Montgomery and Jacqua Williams each scored 18 points as the No. 24/22 Georgia Tech women’s basketball team earned a 68-50 win over Miami (10-7, 0-3 ACC) Monday night at the BankUnited Center.
Montgomery registered her fourth career double-double and third of the season after grabbing 11 rebounds to go with her 18 points. Williams went a career-best 11-of-14 from the free-throw line, including nine-of-10 in the second half, to go with six assists and four steals. Iasia Hemingway added 11 points and seven boards off the bench.
“Jacqua once again stepped up big for us,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She knocked down some important free-throws down the stretch. Alex had a huge second half for us. Her two three-pointers early in the second gave us some momentum. Big-time players step up and hit big-time shots.”
The Yellow Jackets (13-3, 1-1), who had trailed only two times this season at the half, entered the locker room down 31-27. Tech outrebounded the Hurricanes 16-11 but turned the ball over an unusual 15 times in the first half. Tech also connected on only five-of-10 free-throw attempts as it fell behind.
Behind by one point early in the second half, Tech went on a 15-0 run beginning at the 14:00 mark sparked by a pair of Montgomery three-point field goals to give the Jackets an 11-point lead with 8:50 remaining. The `Canes cut the lead to three with 6:36 but would get any closer as Tech scored 15 of their final 17 points from the free-throw line to earn the win.
The Yellow Jackets will return to Florida next weekend when they travel to Tallahassee Sunday, Jan. 18 for a meeting with Florida State. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and will be televised on the ACC Regional Sports Network (Fox Sports South in Atlanta).
