Montgomery Named ACC Rookie of the Week

Jan. 21, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Alex Montgomery and Maryland’s Crystal Langhorne were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie and Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, January 20. Montgomery earned her second weekly league recognition of the season.

Montgomery caused match-up problems for the NC State Wolfpack defense in her 25 minutes of action last Thursday. On Sunday, the Tacoma, Wash., native had a breakout game against one of the best teams in the country, fourth-ranked Maryland. Montgomery scored a career-high 26 points for the Yellow Jackets and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds against the Terps. The newcomer hit four three-pointers and tallied a career-high 11 field goals.

Langhorne began the week helping Maryland post its fifth win over a ranked opponent this season, scoring 16 points and seven rebounds against 10th-ranked Duke, snapping a nine-game home losing streak to the Blue Devils. In a tightly contested battle at Virginia, Langhorne’s third bucket of the game broke the Maryland scoring record, topping the 19-year old mark. The senior from Willingboro, N.J., went on to record a double-double, netting 20 points and grabbing a season-high 16 boards.

In another heated game, which resulted in a double-overtime victory for the Terps, Langhorne scored nine of the team’s 17 combined points in the extra periods to hold off Georgia Tech. Recognized prior to the game for breaking the school scoring record, Langhorne scored 31 points, her sixth-career 30-point outing and three shy of her career high. She also had her second-straight double-double and seventh in nine games, grabbing 15 rebounds, including her 1,100th rebound.

Montgomery’s Georgia Tech squad will return to action on Thursday, welcoming No. 10 Duke for a 7 p.m. contest. Langhorne and the Maryland Terrapins have the week to rest before traveling to face third-ranked North Carolina in a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 26.
