Men's Tennis Upsets No. 7 North Carolina

Final Results

THE FLATS —  The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (7-6, 2-2) defeated No. 7 North Carolina, 4-3 on Friday night at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

The Jackets entered singles trailing 1-0 after the Tar Heels clinched the doubles point.

In singles, both Phillip Gresk and Brandon Freestone picked up early wins for the Jackets.

Gresk defeated No. 40 Benjamin Sigouin, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, while Freestone topped Simon Soendergaard, 6-2, 6-2.

Carlos Divar fell to No. 47 William Blumberg in an epic three set battle, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and Chris Yun dropped his match to No. 82 Brian Cernoch, 6-1, 6-2.

With the Jackets trailing the Tar Heels 3-2, the Jackets needed to win the remaining two matches to earn the victory.

Andrew Li topped No. 107 Josh Peck, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and Pablo Schelcher defeated Blaine Boyden, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to clinch the match for the Jackets.

On the season, the Jackets are now 7-1 at home with wins over No. 7 North Carolina and No. 21 Florida State.

The Jackets will be back in action on Sunday, March 17th at home against Duke.
