West Nott held on to defeat Thomas Bieri 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 3 flight of singles to clinch the match for the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team, defeating No. 51 Oregon by a 5-2 margin Friday afternoon. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 7-3 while the Ducks fall to 7-3.
The Yellow Jackets opened the match winning the doubles point as the fifteenth ranked duo of Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac defeated Thomas Bieri and Manuel Kost, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Tech then earned the point at No. 3 doubles, as Joao Menano and Zachary Rath teamed together to beat Markus Schiller and Chris King, 8-4. In the final doubles match, Sven Swinnen and Arron Spencer outlasted West Nott and Jason Pieters, 8-6.
The Jackets then received singles victories from Schnugg, who defeated Kost in two close sets, 7-6, 7-5 at No. 1, Zachary Rath, who won at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2. The Jackets also received singles wins from Rajevac who won at No. 6, 7-6, 6-3. In other singles matches, Pieters fell at No. 2 singles to Swinnen, 6-2, 6-4 while Spencer defeated Menano in three sets at No. 5, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they face No. 27 Minnesota at 5 p.m. ET in Eugene, Ore.
