The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 1 Illinois 7-0 on Friday. With the win, the Fighting Illini improve to 9-0 on the year while the Jackets fall to 5-1.
The Yellow Jackets opened the match by dropping the doubles point as Joao Menano and Trevor McLeod fell at No. 3 to R. DeHeart and GD Jones, 8-0. Illinois then clinched the doubles point as the 14th-ranked duo of M. Calkins and C. Martin paired to defeat Jason Pieters and West Nott, 8-4. At the No. 1 doubles flight, Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac fell to P. Stolt and B. Wilson in a close match, 9-8 (2).
Tech continued to struggle in singles play, as Schnugg fell in straight sets at No. 1 to Wilson, 6-1, 6-2. At flight two, Pieters was defeated by Stolt, 6-2, 6-2. The Fighting Illini then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 from No. 47 Martin over Rajevac. In the final three matches, Nott fell to 39th-ranked Calkins at No. 3 in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 while No. 65 DeHeart beat Menano at the fifth flight, 6-3, 6-4 and Rath lost at No. 6 to Jones, 7-5, 7-6 (4).
The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow when they face No. 65 Louisville at 3 p.m. in Champaign, Ill.
