ATLANTA – All-American Kevin King won at No. 1 singles for the fifth time in six matches this spring and teamed with Juan Spir for a shutout at No. 1 doubles, leading 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech past Oglethorpe, 7-0, Monday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Tech (2-4) ended a four-match skid, including three losses to top-20 teams, against the Stormy Petrels (0-1), a match added to the schedule after the Yellow Jackets did not advance to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships, which are set for next weekend.

“We want to thank Coach (Peter) Howell for coming out to play our guys,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “They fought well for being such a young team and will continue to improve over the next few years.

“It was important today for our guys to get back on the court and get a win after the tough loss to South Carolina (last Saturday). We have a lot of work left to get to where we need to be but it feels good to be moving in the right direction and improving on areas that need work.”

The Yellow Jackets won the doubles point with a pair of shutouts, including King and spir at No. 1 and the freshman tandem of Eduardo Segura and Colin Edwards. Then King (at No. 1 singles), Spir (at No. 2) and freshman Vikram Hundal (at No. 5) quickly clinched the match with straight-set victories in which they dropped just one game.

Tech hosts Georgia State at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and William & Mary at 2 p.m. Thursday.
