THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s swimming and diving team has been ranked No. 21 in the December CSCAA Division I poll.
Tech is one of seven ACC teams to earn a spot in this month’s national ranking. Out of all 25 programs ranked in the poll, the Jackets have competed against four of the top 20 teams.
The men currently have a winning record which includes victories over two ACC teams, Pitt and Boston College.
Throughout the season, Tech has recorded multiple school records and NCAA qualifying marks. Some of the top contributors to the team’s success have been Ruben Lechuga, Batur Ünlü and Berke Saka.
This fall, Lechuga has been honored with ACC Men’s Diver of the Week three separate times. In Tech’s first meet of the regular season, Lechuga broke both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives with NCAA Zone qualifying scores.
Ünlü and Saka have both been top performers for the men’s swim team. Ünlü has broken two school records and swam four NCAA ‘B’ Cut times. Saka recently swam a school record in the 200 back and recorded three NCAA ‘B’ Cut times.
Tech’s next meet will feature No. 8 Texas A&M and SCAD. The Jackets will host the two teams at McAuley Aquatic Center on Friday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m.
Competitive Drive Initiative
In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative met its initial fundraising goal of $2.5 million in less than six weeks and has extended its target to $3.5 million raised by Dec. 31. Any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, meaning that if the $3.5 million fundraising goal is met, the matching gift would result in a $7 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
