Matthews Wins Long Jump at U.S. Junior Nationals

June 26, 2016

CLOVIS, Calif. – Georgia Tech freshman Bria Matthews has added yet another accomplishment to her list, as she was able to win the long jump at the USATF Junior Nationals. Her jump of 6.49m (21-3.5) eclipsed her school-record mark set during her freshman season. She also earned a spot in the World Junior Championships, which take place July 19-24 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

“It was an outstanding effort today for Bria, and we’re so happy for her,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “She had several great jumps but saved the best for last. It will be exciting to see what she can do on the international level next month.”

Avery Bartlett also competed for the Jackets on Saturday, finishing seventh in the finals of the 800m with a time of 1:50.43.

Matthews will compete on Sunday in the triple jump, while Amy Ruiz will compete in the finals of 1500m. Live results can be followed at buzz.gt/JrResults.
