THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis’ Andres Martin earned a spot on the 2021 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Minimum requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher and a 3.0 GPA or higher in the most recent semester. In addition to academic success, athletic achievements from the 2021 season were factored into the selection process as each of the honorees were named All-American, All-ACC, NCAA Singles or Doubles selection, ACC Player or Freshman of the Week, ranked in the final ITA polls or a UTR ITA Player of the Week.
An All-ACC second team honoree, Martin posted a 17-8 overall singles record, competing mainly at the No. 2 seed, to help the Yellow Jackets to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2017. In doubles play, Martin compiled a 17-5 overall ledger, including a 6-2 conference mark.
The redshirt freshman earned at-large bids into the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship, climbing as high as No. 24 in the ITA national singles rankings and No. 17 in the doubles poll. He advanced to the second round in singles competition after edging Alabama’s Edson Ortiz in the round of 64. Pairing with teammate Marcus McDaniel in the doubles field, the Jackets uprooted South Carolina’s 13th-ranked team of Daniel Rodrigues/Connor Thomson in straight-sets to reach the round of 16.
In February, Martin was named the ACC Co-Player of the Week after defeating ninth-ranked Trent Bryde of Georgia, in three sets.
