Lemons, Fofanah Lead Jackets at VT Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior James Lemons II placed first in the men’s long jump to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and 22nd-ranked women’s teams on the second day of the VT Elite meet at the Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.

Lemons finished with a personal-best and NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark of 25 feet, 4 inches to earn the win in the long jump. Alphonso Jordan placed fourth with a personal-best mark of 24 feet, ¾ inches.

Fatmata Fofanah crossed the line second in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with an NCAA Championship automatic qualifying time of 8.09 seconds. Shantia Moss placed third in the race with a provisional qualifying time of 8.15 seconds.

Hunter Clasen led a group of three men who finished in the top 10 of the 400-meter dash. Clasen crossed the line fifth with a time 49.27. Subbu Sivanesan finished sixth with a season-best time of 49.64 and Mario Johnson placed eighth with a season-best time of 49.87.

E.C. Gibbs finished in fifth place in the men’s 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1:53.11. In the men’s mile invitational, David Herren finished fourth with a season-best time of 4:13.81.

Lindsey Pickens placed 10th in the women’s mile with a season-best time of 5:18.28. In the men’s mile, Mark Mendrek-Laske finished eighth with a time of 4:22.85.

The Jackets will continue their indoor season next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 15-16 by sending members of the squad to both the Iowa State Classic and the Tiger Invitational.
