THE FLATS – Georgia Tech sophomores Kendal Woodard and Megan Kureywill head out Pacific Palisades, Calif. this week to compete in the 2013 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.
The duo qualified for the doubles main draw of the All-American Championships this August after winning the ITA National Collegiate Summer Circuit Doubles Title in August. Main draw competition runs from Oct. 3-6.
Woodard, who is ranked No. 67 in singles in the preseason rankings, was also selected to play in the qualifying singles round of the national tournament. Woodard will face UNLV’s Lucia Batta at 12:30 p.m. PST in the qualifying singles round on Tuesday. Click here for the qualifying singles bracket. Qualifying singles play runs from Oct. 1-2.
In 2012-13, Woodard was named to the 2013 All-ACC team after finishing her freshman season with a 24-12 overall record in singles play. The Stockbridge, Ga. native led the Yellow Jackets in both overall singles (24) and doubles (28) wins. Woodard finished her first season for the Yellow Jackets ranked at No. 88 in singles.
Currently, Woodard and Kurey are ranked at No. 26 in the 2013-14 ITA women’s preseason doubles rankings. The pair went 24-6 overall doubles record last year, including a 20-3 mark in dual matches and a 9-1 ACC record. They went 14-3 from the No. 1 doubles spot, won nine of their final 10 matches and finished the year ranked No. 60 in the ITA rankings.
For the 29th year, the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., will serve as the host site for the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. The national event is set to begin on Saturday, September 28 with pre-qualifying singles and doubles matches, which will be hosted by UCLA. Main draw action is slated for Thursday, October 3-6.
