King, Franklin Named ACC Players of the Week

THE FLATS – After helping Georgia Tech amass 635 yards of total offense – its most ever in an Atlantic Coast Conference game – in Saturday’s 46-42 win over No. 17 North Carolina, Tech quarterback Haynes King (Longview, Texas/Longview H.S.) and center Weston Franklin (Jesup, Ga./Wayne County H.S.) have been named the ACC Quarterback and Offensive Lineman of the Week, respectively.

King compiled 377 of Georgia Tech’s 635 yards on his own, with 287 passing and 90 rushing. His 287 passing yards came on 23-of-30 passing and included four touchdowns, making him only the second quarterback in Tech history to throw for at least four touchdowns in a game three times in a season (joining Joe Hamilton, who had at least four TD passes in three games in 1999, when he finished second in voting for the Heisman Trophy). King’s .767 completion percentage was the second-highest ever by a Tech quarterback with at least 30 throws in a game (behind only George Godsey’s .784 completion percentage vs. Virginia in 2000).

Franklin anchored a Georgia Tech offensive front that paved the way for the Yellow Jackets to rush for 348 yards – including a whopping 246 in the fourth quarter – and did not allow a sack for the second-straight game and fourth time in eight games this season. The Jackets’ center provided key blocks on Tech’s two biggest runs of the dominant final period – a 70-yard touchdown by Dontae Smith (Spring Hill, Tenn./Spring Hill H.S.) and a 52-yard gallop by King that set up his 5-yard game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Brett Seither (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic H.S.) with 4:28 to go in the game.

Led by King and Franklin, Georgia Tech’s 635 yards of total offense were its most ever against an ACC opponent, the second-most by an ACC team against an NCAA Division I FBS opponent this season and the 23rd-most by any FBS team overall in 2023. The Jackets’ 348 rushing yards were the most by an ACC team this season and the 18th-most by an FBS team in 2023.

The ACC honors are career firsts for both King and Franklin. They join teammates Kyle Kennard (ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week – Sept. 9 vs. South Carolina State) and Jaylon King (ACC Defensive Back of the Week – Sept. 23 at Wake Forest) as the Yellow Jackets’ ACC POTW recipients this season.

King, Franklin and the Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Virginia. The game will be televised across the nation on The CW (Peachtree TV – Ch. 17 in Atlanta).

Tickets remain for Georgia Tech’s final two home games of the regular season – Nov. 18 versus Syracuse and Nov. 25 against archrival Georgia. Click HERE to purchase tickets online.
