Johnson Named ACC Rookie of the Week

Sept. 13, 2004

Georgia Tech’s true freshman wide receiver Calvin Johnson earned his first Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week award following a spectacular performance in the Yellow Jackets’ miraculous 28-24 road win at 18th-ranked Clemson.

The 6-4, 225-pounder caught three touchdown passes, including two in the final two minutes to help bring Tech back from a 10-point deficit.

With Tech trailing 24-14, Johnson hauled in two “jump balls” from sophomore quarterback Reggie Ball, first from eight yards out with 1:50 left and then the game-winner from 11 yards out with just 11 seconds left.

Johnson also had a spectacular 37-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. He is one of just six Tech players–and the only freshman–to catch three or more touchdowns in a game, and the first since Dez White vs. Virginia in 1998.

A native of Tyrone, Ga., who attended Sandy Creek High School, Johnson finished the game with eight catches for 127 yards.
