BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Georgia Tech track & field competed at the NCAA East Preliminary round on Friday. The Yellow Jackets had one competitor on the day, John Watkins in the triple jump.
Watkins got started on a rain soaked runway in Bloomington. Watkins would record a jump of 13.60m (44′ 7 1/2″) on his third jump. That would be his best mark, which did not advance him to the next round of three jumps.
The White and Gold will wrap up east preliminary action on Saturday with the goal of placing in the top 12 to qualify for NCAA Championships. Nicole Fegans will race in the 5000m, a race she currently holds the ninth best time in the region.
Also racing on the track on Saturday is Taylor Grimes. Grimes competed on Thursday, clocking the third fastest non-automatic qualifying time and the thirteenth fastest time overall, better than seven automatic qualifying times.
In field events, Jackets high jumpers will take center stage when Shanty Papakosta and Carla du Plessis compete in the event. Papakosta ranks 21st in the event in the east region with a mark of 1.79m, 0.03m shy of 12th place in the region. Du Plessis is 30th in the east region with a mark of 1.77m.
