Fifty-nine Georgia Tech student-athletes, including members of the football, baseball, volleyball, golf, men’s tennis and track teams, as well as the entire women’s tennis and softball teams, lent a hand over the weekend to the 2007 Special Olympics State Winter Games, assisting Special Olympic athletes from around the state compete in bowling at Brunswick Zone Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The Georgia Tech athletes helped cheer on the Special Olympians as they competed in both individual and team bowling, while also assisting in the organization of bowlers, athlete and volunteer check-in and scorekeeping.

The Yellow Jackets also had the opportunity to collect autographs from a few of the state’s best Special Olympic bowlers, including one female who bowled a 169-144-142–455, which garnered many cheers from Georgia Tech contingent.

Saturday’s competition included approximately 80 females from around the state competing for individual gold medals, while Sunday’s bowling consisted of more than 30 unified teams from Georgia vying for medals.

“I have been very impressed by the turnout of Georgia Tech student-athletes at this year’s community service projects, and this event is no exception,” said Rob Skinner, advisor for the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board. “We had athletes from almost all of our teams that are not currently in competition, including a few that are even in-season, to show up this weekend, which says a lot about their goal to make a difference in this community.”
