ATHENS, Ga.: Three freshman from the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team earned wins over University of Miami opponents on the final day of competition at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.
Doug Kenny, fresh off a run to the Division III singles round of 16, defeated Westin Wendt, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in a tightly contested match. Kenny finished the weekend with three wins for the Jackets.
Eliot Potvin, a Hampden, Maine native, picked up a straight set, 6-3, 6-3, win over Hector Nieto. Also winning in straight sets was Ryan Smith, who posted a 7-5, 6-4, win over Barnabas Carrega.
In doubles play, the Tech duo of George Gvelesiani and Smith fell to Hector Nieto and Barnabes Carrega, 9-8 (7-4), in a very close match.
The Jackets are scheduled to return to action this weekend at the ITA All-Americans Tournament.
