Jackets Start Strong at National Collegiate Tennis Classic

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Amanda McDowell, Christy Striplin and Kirsten Flower recorded wins in both singles and doubles on the first day of competition at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, which is being contested at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Palm Springs, Calif.

McDowell and Striplin began the day by teaming together to defeat Texas’ duo of Vanja Corovic and Ristine Olson, 9-8 (5) before eventually falling to Southern California’s tandem of Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink, 8-4, in the second round.

The two Yellow Jackets responded with victories in their first singles matches of the tournament, as McDowell dropped Baylor’s Zuzana Chmelarova, 6-4, 6-0, and Striplin stopped UCLA’s Elizabeth Lumpkin, 6-1, 6-1.

Flower teamed with fellow freshman Amanda Craddock to stop Stanford’s doubles team of Lejla Hodzic and Whitney Deason, 9-8 (3) after falling to Southern Cal’s Sarah Fansler and Dianne Matias, 8-5, in their opening doubles match.

Flower won her first singles match of the tournament, 7-6 (6), 6-4, against Texas’ Sarah Lancaster, while Craddock suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss in the first round to Lancaster’s teammate, Courtney Zauft.

The Yellow Jackets will continue play at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic Saturday morning.
