Jackets Sit In 10th After Day Two Of The ACC Indoor Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – On day two of the 2011 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Georgia Tech qualified three different athletes for the finals on Saturday, with all of the qualifiers coming in either first or second place in their respective races.

Antonio McKay Jr. kept his success at the Rector Field House going with his first place finish in the 400m Dash prelims. McKay finished automatically qualified for the finals, winning his heat with a time of 47.42 seconds. Teammates Hunter Clasen and Subbu Sivanesan took 12th (49.48) and 18th (49.97) respectively in the race.

Leslie Njoku continued her success in the 60m Hurdles racing into second place with a season best time of 8.30 seconds, also automatically qualifying for the finals after winning heat three. Her time is currently the 25th fastest in the country. Teammate Melanie Akwule was just shy of qualifying herself with a ninth place finish in 8.42 seconds while Jasmine Isley earned a season best time of 8.62 seconds for a 14th place finish.

Shawn Roberts was the other Jacket to earn a spot in the finals with a second place finish in the 800m Run. Roberts finished in a time of 1:50.64, in his first time running the 800m this season.

The trio of Jenae Anderson, Taylor Davidson and Akwule all set season bests in the 60m Dash. Anderson finished in ninth, just out of reach of qualifying for the finals with a time of 7.48 seconds. Davidson took 17th, crossing in 7.64 and Akwule finished in 23rd place with a time of 7.84 seconds.

On the men’s side, Perron Jones notched a time of 6.87 seconds for a 10th place finish while Michael Simms and Joe Dida took 19th and 20th with season best time of 7.13 and 7.14 seconds respectively.

On the field side of things, Jasmine Kent and Julienne McKee nabbed some points for the Jackets with their seventh and eighth place finishes in the Long Jump. Kent launched herself a season best 6.03 meters while McKee went 5.97m at the meet.

On the men’s side of things, Jonathan Gardner earned a 14th place showing in the long jump with a season best leap of 6.65m.

Duncan Thompson took sixth in the weight throw for Tech with a distance of 17.93m while Mykhail Chambers finished 10th in the high jump with a height of 2.00m

Joanna Wright took fifth in the pole vault for the Jackets earning a height of 4.05m.

In the relays, the men’s foursome of Alec Clifford, Jay Oatts, Roberts and Eric Powers finished 10th with a time of 10:05.62 while the women took 11th as Maureen McMeekin, Jade Sims, Maureen Kownack and Betsy Kim crossed the line in 12:19.07.

The Jackets will be back in action in their final day of the 2011 ACC Indoor Championships, Saturday.
