THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-8, 4-0 ACC) shutout NC State (14-10, 2-4 ACC) 3-0 on Friday night in the series opener at Mewborn Field. The Jackets are 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 2011 and have won 13 of their last 15 contests.
Head coach Aileen Morales says:
“Anderson threw a great game today and put us in a great spot to win. I was proud of the at bats in the top of the first to manufacture two runs. Lastly, Sonnon tacked on another homer in the fifth to give us a little more breathing room in the sixth and seventh. We look to bring this momentum into tomorrow’s game.”
How it happened:
The Jackets struck first. With one out in the bottom of the first, freshman Cameron Stanford drew a walk to reach base, extending her reached-base streak to 16 games. Senior Draven Sonnon reached on a fielder’s choice with Stanford out at second on the play. Junior Katie Krzus doubled to left center, moving Sonnon to third. With two outs and runners on second and third, freshman Lilly Hooper sent a clutch single down the right field line, plating Sonnon and Krzus to give Tech the lead at 2-0.
Sonnon added to Tech’s tally in the fifth. With two outs on the board, the senior sent her fourth home run of the season over center field to bring the score to 3-0.
Senior Emily Anderson pitched her 13th complete game, earning her 11th win and fourth shutout of the season. She tallied eight strikeouts, three in the top of the seventh to seal the win. With the final strikeout, the LaGrange native hit the 100 strikeout mark for the season. With 374 career strikeouts, Anderson now holds the fifth-most strikeouts in Tech history, overtaking Tiffany Johnson’s total of 373 from 2007-09.
