GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior Lynn Blau has been named ACC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2011 spring season, announced today by the conference office.
Through the first two days of the Michigan Invitational, the Koerich, Luxembourg, native went 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action.
Blau placed sixth in the singles portion of the tournament with 12 points.
Blau claimed two wins on the weekend playing from the No. 5 spot in the lineup. In both matches, she dropped the first set and was down to match-point, but battled back for tough, three set wins.
On Saturday, she defeated Kata Szekely of 13th-ranked Tennessee, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Following singles play, Blau teamed with Elizabeth Kilborn to beat Washington’s Samantha Smith and Lina Xu, 8-3.
On Sunday, she topped Mimi Nguyen of eighth-ranked and host Michigan, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. Her lone defeat through the first two days came in doubles play as Blau and Kilborn dropped a tough 8-6 match to Tennessee’s ninth-ranked team of Millie Nichols and Rosalia Alda.
The tournament concluded on Monday afternoon and Blau tallied her third singles win of the weekend, defeating Washington’s Samantha Smith 6-3, 6-3 in the third spot of the order. Her and Kilborn again faltered in doubles play as Michigan’s Brooke Bolender and Denise Muresan edged the Jackets,
