Jackets' Howard Collects Second ACC Track Rookie Honor

April 23, 2003

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fresh off her second league high jump title of the 2003 season, Georgia Tech freshman Chaunte Howard was named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday. Awards were determined by a vote of the nine ACC head coaches.

Howard, who also earned indoor rookie of the year honors, won the high jump at last weekend’s ACC meet with a mark of 6’0.00″. Additionally, she placed eighth in the long jump. Howard currently leads the nation in the high jump with a 6’2.00″ performance at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, which established a school record.

Howard joins current North Carolina standout Shalene Flanagan as the only female competitors to earn both indoor and outdoor rookie accolades. The ACC first awarded rookie of the year honors following the 1999 outdoor championship. Tech middle distance All-American Brendon Mahoney garnered both honors during the 2000 season.

Howard, who is qualified for the NCAA East Region Championships in both the high jump and long jump, competes this weekend at the historic Penn Relays.
