In celebration of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Winter Unity Week, which runs Feb. 19-26, Georgia Tech athletics hosted student-athletes and staff at a “Family Dinner” on Monday night. Held at McCamish Pavilion, the Family Dinner was highlighted by:
- Georgia Tech’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Huddle introduction;
- Student-Athlete Advisory Board presentation given by Mikaila Dowd on the concept/history of the Family Dinner;
- Introduction of Georgia Tech’s inaugural ACC UNITE Award winners:
- Jan Chandler Hilliard –women’s basketball
- Eddie McAshan –football
- Harvey Webb – men’s basketball (freshman team)
Georgia Tech also honored its ACC UNITE Award winners, presenting each with a commemorative plaque. The ACC UNITE Award was created by the ACC’s CORE group to honor individuals affiliated with the league who have made an impact in the areas of racial and social justice. The first year of the award, the league celebrated the individuals who – according to available information – were the first male and female athletes of color to integrate athletic teams at each ACC institution.
The dinner also continued Georgia Tech’s celebration of Black History Month as it was catered by a black owned food venue.
