Jackets Drop Opening Game to Wake

Box Score (.pdf)

THE FLATS – No. 6 Georgia Tech baseball dropped its first home game of the season on Friday night, falling 5-3 to Wake Forest at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (14-4, 3-1 ACC) were unable to come up with the big hit when it needed it most, leaving 12 runners on base for the game and hitting an uncharacteristic 2-for-14 with two outs, while the Demon Deacons (15-3, 2-2 ACC) capitalized early on an infield error that led to a three-run homer.

Offensively, Tech recorded nine hits overall with Tres Gonzalez leading the way. He finished with two hits and the two lone RBI for the team. Tim Borden II also finished with two hits.

On the mound, starter RHP Chance Huff (2-1) allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work before LHP Cody Carwile dealt 3.2 innings of two-hit, shutout work where he struck out five hitters to just one walk. LHP Dalton Smith then closed the game with a clean ninth.

Wake was led by Michael Turconi, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI on the home run. RHP Rhett Lowder (5-0) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

The Yellow Jackets continue the conference series on Saturday, March 19. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network and WREK 91.1 FM.
