BLACKSBURG, Va. – At the end of the first day of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams finished with nine top-10 finishes, including a first place showing by senior Antonio McKay, Jr. in the 400-meter dash.
The Jackets recorded a handful of season bests at the meet including a quick finish by Leslie Njoku in the 60m hurdles who upped her season best by over two-tenths of a second with her seventh place, 8.50 second preliminary finish. (Njoku finished eighth overall in the final race.) Melanie Akwule finished just behind Njoku in the preliminary run, just out of reach of the finals with a time of 8.51 seconds.
Also seeing improvement on the day were Julienne McKee and Jasmine Kent in the long jump. The duo finished third and fifth with distances of 5.99m and 5.93m respectively. Duncan Thompson upped his season best in the weight throw with an 11th place toss of 18.17m
McKay’s finish was his fastest of the season in the 400m dash and was his first victory of 2011 as he raced across the line in 47.09, which is currently the 15th fastest time in the country.
Mary Kate DuBard knocked 10 seconds off of her 3000m time, finishing eighth in the race with a time of 9:51.38 seconds as the first Jacket across the line.
Perron Jones continued his success on the season, first taking a seventh place finish in the 60m dash, crossing with a time of 6.90 seconds. Jones raced out to another top-10 finish with his ninth place showing in the 200m dash, finishing with a time of 22.44 seconds.
Tech will finish out completion at the meet on Saturday.
