THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets finished 11th Saturday on the final day of the 2015 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship at the GT Aquatic Center. Georgia Tech concluded the championship with 203 points.
Virginia won the ACC championship, finishing with 1,308 points. North Carolina finished second with 1,255 points. Louisville’s Tanja Kylliainen was the women’s most valuable swimmer; Virginia Tech’s Kaylea Arnett was the women’s most valuable diver, while Miami’s Briadam Herrera took home the men’s most valuable diver honor.
During the morning session, sophomore Maddie Paschal touched the wall in 2:01.89 in the backstroke, missing the C finals by 15 hundredths of a second. Freshman Megan Young finished 32nd (2:03.38), sophomore Xanna Tracy finished 34th (2:06.22) and junior Carly Sweeney finished 35th (2:07.15).
Megan Lyons posted a time of 51.63 in the 100 freestyle, followed by freshman Kira de Bruyn with a time of 53.66.
Efrat Rotsztjen qualified for the evening’s 200 breaststroke C finals in 20th place with a time of 2:16.73.
Senior Catherine Richards swam the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:20.26 during the prelims.
Frederique Lefebvre and Kate Brandus both competed in the 200 butterfly. Lefevbre finished with a time of 2:04.75, while Brandus was clocked at 2:05.87.
Sarah Williford finished 15th in the mile (1650 freestyle) with a time of 16:46.27, earning 12 points for the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech did not have a diver qualify for Saturday night’s platform finals. Junior Shannon Lumbra finished 11th in the prelims with a score of 224.75. Sophomore Madison Young (195.20) and Freshman Ellen Posch (165.70) finished 24th and 37th, respectively.
On the men’s side, sophomore Omar Eteiba narrowly missed making the finals, finishing 10th with a score of 295.50. Sophomore Brad Homza, who finished seventh in Friday’s 3M finals, scored 271.50 to finish 15th.
Georgia Tech will host the first of two long course trials Sunday at the GT Aquatic Center. The event is open to all NCAA institutions (both men and women), but the times attained will not count toward NCAA Championship qualification.
Sunday’s timed finals will begin at 11 a.m. and consist of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 IM, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 800 freestyle (women only) and 1500 freestyle (men only).
The 2015 ACC Men’s Swimming Championship will be held Feb. 25-28 at the GT Aquatic Center.
