Athens, Ga. – Guillermo Gomez outlasted Florida’s Antoine Benneteau in three sets, and Miguel Muguruza defeated Georgia’s Nate Schnugg Sunday in the round of 16, and both players reached the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional men’s tennis championships.
Gomez, the second seed in the regional, defeated Benneteau 6-1, 6-7 (11), 7-6 (9) in his second match of the day after easily dispatching South Florida’s Peter Frank, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32. Muguruza won his round of 32 match against the Bulls’ Mark Oljaca Saturday. He then reached the quarterfinals when Schnugg, leading 5-2 in the first set, retired with an injury.
Muguruza will meet Florida State’s Clint Bowles in the quarterfinals Sunday morning, while Gomez will face Florida’s Johnny Hamui. Both matches begin at 10 a.m.
In other singles action Sunday, Eliot Potvin, Dusan Miljevic and Juan Spir all won matches in the round of 32 before falling in the round of 16. Potvin shut out Georgia Southern’s Alain Garrido, 6-0, 6-0, before falling to Florida State’s Clint Bowles in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. Miljevic beat Georgia’s Jamie Hunt in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) to run his fall record to 9-0 before dropping a straight-set match (6-1, 6-0) to the Seminoles’ Vahid Mirzadeh. Spir eliminated Florida’s Carlos Cueto, 6-3, 7-6, before losing to Georgia’s Drake Bernstein, 6-2, 6-2.
Dean O’Brien, Ryan Smith and Magin Ortiga all lost in the round of 32, while Austin Roebuck, a first-round loser Friday, lost his consolation match Saturday.
In doubles, the team of Dean O’Brien and Eliot Potvin lost in the quarterfinals, 8-5, to FSU’s Connor Smith and Mirzadeh.
