LUBBOCK, Texas – Georgia Tech’s All-America catcher Matt Wieters and all-conference center fielder Danny Payne have been named preseason candidates for the College Baseball Player of the Year award, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation in Lubbock, Texas Monday evening.
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year. The 2006 winner, Brad Lincoln of Houston, signed a professional contract last summer with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
The Wallace Watch will be trimmed to 12 semifinalists by late May, and the selection committee will narrow the list to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals, prior to the College World Series. The finalists, their head coaches, and their parents will be invited to Lubbock, Texas, for a schedule of special events tied to the award banquet, which will again be nationally televised by Fox Sports Network and Fox College Sports.
A total of 12 players from the Atlantic Coast Conference were named to the 2007 Preseason Wallace Watch list, and are listed below:
