Feb. 15, 2003

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The 24th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was unable build momentum in singles play after dropping the doubles point and dropped a 6-1 decision to 10th-ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.

The Commodores (9-1) took early control in the match with the Yellow Jackets (3-2) as they claimed a pair of doubles victories to open the day. Vanderbilt’s team of Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos defeated Tech’s tandem of Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson at No. 1 by an 8-6 score, while Menees and Schellhas downed the Jackets’ Lyndsay Shosho and Sekita Grant by an 8-4 score at No. 3 to win the point. The Yellow Jackets’ team of Maria Nieto and Catherine Gunn defeated Audra Falk and Kelly Schmandt at No. 2 by an 8-5 count for Tech’s only doubles win. The win by the Commodores marked the first time that Tech has dropped the doubles point in a match this year.

In singles play, Vanderbilt won the match when Schmandt rallied to defeat Tech’s Kelly Anderson at No. 3. Anderson won the first set by a 6-3 score, but was unable to hold on, as Schmandt won the second set by a 6-0 score before battling for a 6-4 win in the third. Freshman Lyndsay Shosho was the Yellow Jackets lone singles winner of the day, as she defeated Ashley Schellhas at No. 5 in straight sets by a 7-6, 6-1 score.
