Georgia Tech Women's Tennis Downs Auburn, 5-2

ATLANTA-Freshman Alison Silverio helped clinch both the doubles point and the match as Georgia Tech (3-2) defeated Auburn (3-2) this afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Louisville, Ohio native slammed Auburn’s Petra Bercik in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) to guaranteed victory for the Yellow Jackets.

“I felt like our team played really played well today,” head coach Brian Shelton stated. “We showed up ready to play and we performed well.”

The Yellow Jackets started off strong winning the doubles point. No. 1 and No. 2 doubles split with the tandem of Maria Nieto and Lyndsay Shosho edging out the victory at No. 2, 8-4, and Sekita Grant and Lindsey Stauss coming up short, 6-8. Tech’s final pair of the afternoon, Kelly Anderson and Alison Silverio took the final match and the doubles point with a thrilling 9-7 victory.

In singles action, Anderson and Stauss quickly dispatched of Auburn in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions respectively. Both won in straight sets setting up Silverio for the deciding match. The final point of the afternoon came at the No. 1 position. Lyndsay Shosho battled from being down one set to take the match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. On court six, Sekita Grant fell to Nancy Pearden of Auburn. With the match already locked, the two played a tiebreaker, which Pearden won 10-4 giving her a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 victory. Tech’s final match of the afternoon, Georgia Tech’s Maria Nieto withdrew with an injury in the second set.

Georgia Tech returns to action this Sunday, February 22, as the Jackets play host to cross town rival Georgia State. The match will begin at noon and will take place at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
